While there are many jobs listed on the Internet, some just don’t pay off, at least for me and many other Internet geeks. Filling out forms, joining surveys, you name it, I have tried and failed at it. Yet there are jobs to do online from home. But they mean you are in business for yourself. But, what could be better than that?

In fact that is how the Internet gurus skim off millions of dollars every year from those looking for online work. Gurus are Internet marketers. They will be your competitors if you decide to join that profession.

Most Internet marketers sell products as affiliates.

They get paid when their potential customer or client buys a product or, if there is no product, they get paid for a lead or perhaps for an action that the potential customer makes. So you have CPS, CPL, or CPA. We will use those definitions.

Affiliate Networks

ClickBank.com, CJ.com and many other sites offer CPS. You pick the products and make the customer want to read more about it. You warm him up to the “buying mode.”

By the way, if you have your own products, you might do a lot better than being an affiliate. I do both, my own stuff and other people’s stuff.

Some sites also offer PPL and pay you for leads. Some networks specialize in this. It is very hard for a new affiliate marketer to join these networks.

They like to deal with super affiliates that are already making a ton of money. The same for CPA that pays for an action. It is easier to push a PPL or PPA than a PPS. You get paid less but you get more action. You should try to get into a network that uses PPL and PPA. Good luck! Try calling the affiliate manager and begging him or her.

Internet marketers are know for having websites and blogs. They update their blogs frequently and ping them at pingomatic.com or other such sites. That way they are continually gathering names for their email list and letting everyone know how smart they are about the blog subject. You don’t have to have a website to make money by affiliate marketing. Just buy a piggy bank for your earnings. The big money comes from websites and blogs where visitor names are collected and added to the potential customer list.

When you read some guru’s ad that said he made $ 32,567.87 in less than 34 hours, maybe he did. Maybe he didn’t. If he did, he emailed a new offer to his humongous mailing list. Oh, for such a list! Just because he showed you the earnings doesn’t mean they were real. Lot’s of crooks on the Internet! Lots of scams on the Internet! Stay away from the gurus. Well, at least be careful.

SEO is building your website so that the search engines will like you and visitors will find you. To do this you provide relevant content and you use keywords that folks are using in their searches. You get others to link to your site. Every visit counts and the search engines seem to like links. There are two other major methods used by Internet marketers to drive traffic to their site as follows:

Article Marketing

You find a keyword or keyword phase that has folks using it in their searches and you make sure that the keyword or phrase does not bring up too many competitive sites (fewer than 5000). You can find all the keywords in the world. Just put Google AdWord keyword tool in your address or search bar, either works. Up pops the tool. Once you have found a promising keyword or phrase, put quotation marks around it, e.g. “keyword”, and place it in the search bar or address bar. Up will pop all the sites. Are there less than 5000?

Now write an article, as I am doing here, and put the keyword phrase in the title, the first and last paragraph, with a slight sprinkling here and there. On your web page for that keyword, also do the same with the keyword. Make sure your content on the web page gives more good content that there was not enough room for in the article.

Most article sites do not allow direct affiliate links. That is why you need a blog or web page. However, in the Source Box you can place a link to a web page on your site. There you can warm up your potential customer, but do not try to sell, and give a link to the vendor’s site. The vendor does the selling, not you!

PPC Marketing

PPC marketing is used by most all successful, big money, affiliates. You can put such ads on Facebook very easily but the more successful ads are run on Google, Yahoo, or MSN. You should sign-up at these three sites and then read everything they have to say on the subject. Call them on the phone, send them emails, get some one-on-one instruction. There are also many tutorials on the Internet so make a search.

What you do is find keywords with their powerful tools, select a few keywords and write several ads for each keyword. Now you set a low daily dollar limit and test the ads. Dump those that are not getting clicks. Improve the better ads until you have milked them dry. When you start making more money than you are spending, let the ads run even increase the amount of money you are spending.

Give something away to increase traffic. Offer free S/H. Watch the competitor ads.

Over twenty years married to a Mississippi River tugboat captain who was a compulsive gambler, makes me an authority on gambling. I could compare starting your own Internet marketing business a gamble. Casinos were illegal back room activities when we met in New Orleans. Gambling was an activity on board to while away the time waiting for “jobs” to tow those mighty ships in or out of the Mississippi. Gambling on board was not for matches, or for plastic chips but for hard money and if you gambled with the captain, you would pay up. Poker was the game of choice on his tug, the Sally R, and he was very good at it.

In ways, starting an Internet marketing business or any other business is a gamble. Do I have enough start up capital? Are you going to make any money? How do I deal with my losses? How do I drive more business my way? Am I doing something wrong? I put a bit of money on the table with my chosen system and I continue to hear about people raking in money. Compared to others, I have not risked much money because I have not got much to risk due to being laid off. But I do have time to invest. The question is: Continue to put that time into a business that is not paying off yet or start looking for a “traditional” job again?

Although he was a compulsive gambler, it took me awhile to understand this obsession. I had never gambled because I was taught gambling was a sin. His obsession also led him to take a class on counting cards. He had a genius IQ and became proficient overnight, joined a team and moved us to Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City. E-commerce is like casinos in that it never closes. With a computer or laptop, your business can go where you go to be worked where you are. I choose to persist and be consistent in my home based business but there are occasional doubts that I gambled on the wrong one or gambled on going with home based businesses altogether.

Since I got laid off, I have “gambled” on e-commerce to make a living instead of going back to corporate America. E-commerce is the way to go now and I want to go with it. A traditional job holds nothing for me, no chance for advancement, no way to prepare for retirement and it holds the possibility of another layoff. Despite those occasional doubts, I know the online business I chose is no gamble. The gambling I witnessed, the pain it caused (gambling IS NOT a victim less past time), and the hold it had over my Riverboat Captain’s psyche were very real evils.

The choices of advertising or how you choose to work your business are limitless and might be compared to gambling as you try different ways to market your business until you find what is going to pay off for you. Upon returning to Vegas on November 19, it proved to be too much for me. My company was meeting at the Paris and it was imperative that I attend. I did not plan to get a room while there. I was going to play the penny slots until meeting time but slot machines are different now. I was too embarrassed to go to the cashier with a $ 5 roll of pennies or ask anyone to show me how to work the slots. Just as well as I will not be a part of that life again.

So I got a room and barely made it inside the door before I began to cry. Why had I returned to Vegas? Was this business going to pay off? How sickening it was to look out the window and see casinos in which we had suites and anything else high rollers want. I closed those physical curtains quickly to hide the visible past. I kept crying until I fell asleep for a few hours away from all the hullabaloo as a way to deal with the emotional toll it took to come back to Vegas.

While gambling destroys families, an online business builds hope for an income and a future. The lottery mentality will not get you anywhere in this Internet business. You have to work hard to earn the 5 and 6 figure incomes you will hear about. Instead of gambling your hard earned money away, consider for a moment investing in this Internet marketing business. As you can imagine, communication is very important with home based internet marketing businesses. Once you have your domain name and you have set up your web hosting account it is time to get them talking to each other!  You might remember I compared a domain name to a street address and hosting to the PO Box, well now we are making sure the postal carrier knows that this PO Box belongs to your address.

In this article I’ll cover how to link the domain name you got with GoDaddy and your web hosting account, through Host Gator. These services are available from other places and the process will be really similar if you want to get the services elsewhere.

You will have received an email from Host Gator with your account information. You are going to need that email to do this step. In the email it will have your domain name and some other details about the account, but the key information you will need for this step is the “name servers”.

You will have two different name servers that look very similar to this:

“ns1234.hostgator.com”
“ns1235.hostgator.com”

The actual numbers between the ‘ns’ and the ‘.’ will be different, but if you are using Host Gator for you hosting company the rest will be the same. Other companies will follow a very similar format.

You are going to be putting these numbers into your GoDaddy account, so either write them down or print out that email and have it handy.

Now login to your GoDaddy account, or the domain registrar where you bought your domain.

Click on the Domains link.

Next click on My Domains, and find the domain name you want to link to the hosting account.

Click on that domain name and it will take you to a screen where you can information about your domain.

Look for the name servers on this screen.

The format will be very similar to the hostgator one. GoDaddy’s default name servers are

“NS23.DOMAINCONTROL.COM”
“NS24.DOMAINCONTROL.COM”

This is what you are going to be changing.

Look in the tool bar just about the name servers and you will see a link “NameServers”, click on that. You will see that your nameservers are currently parked.

Click the radio button by Custom nameservers and boxes will appear showing the default nameservers. This is where you are going to type in the namesservers information you got from Host Gator.

Be sure to type it in exactly as you got it in your email. Don’t worry if you type it in lower case and GoDaddy changes it to uppercase.

Click the OK button and then the No Thanks, Set Nameservers button. And one more time, click OK.

This will take you to your name servers page. It will not have updated to the new nameservers yet because it does take a little time for that to take place. Go ahead and log out and when you are next ready to log in you should see the new name servers!

Your home based internet marketing businesses are starting to really take shape! You have your domain name and your hosting account and now they are talking to one another. You are now ready to start building your web pages!

5- Keep going

You’ll have heard of this, especially the need to focus, keep your attention on one thing at a time. Those who fail, jumpabout from one offer to another, from one problem to another.But here’s something I never see mentioned: you do have toshift your focus from tactic/small task to your big pictureregularly. This is to keep an on-going connection betweenthem – too many people get stuck at one or the other level.
