Anyone with home base internet marketing businesses can use expired domain names as a way to make some money as long as you find one with decent traffic. It doesn’t take long and you can get monthly income coming in right away.

How much does it cost

Buying expired domain names can vary in cost. Most of the time you can buy a good domain name for about $ 60-75. With that kind of low investment it is easy to make that a profit. You can of course find domains that will cost you more, but especially when you are starting out I don’t suggest it.

How can you make money

There are a couple ways that you can make money from buying expired domain names.

The first is to redirect that name to your existing website. This works great when you buy a domain name that is in your niche and if you have a website that you use for either list building or promoting products.

A second way to make money is to buy a domain name and then resell it.

This usually means you are going to hold that name for awhile…and while you are holding it you are going to make money from the third method.

The third way to make money with expired domain names is to park them. In this case you don’t have to be in a particular niche, you just redirect the name to a parking company and you collect money from that company. The build a site and put some ads on it and whenever somebody clicks on one of the ads, you make some money.

How long does it take

Redirecting a domain name is really fast and easy to do. If you already have a website you probably know how to do this. If you have done any affiliate marketing where you buy a domain name then you have definitely already gone through the steps and you know how easy it is.

So whether you are redirecting to your own website or to a parking company it really takes about two clicks.

Let’s say the domain is registered with GoDaddy.

Of course the process would be really similar with whatever registration company you are using. Within your account there is a place where you can change the Host Records or the DNS Records.

In the case of parking, you enter in the name server of the parking company you are using.

Bam! That’s it.

Now the very first time of course you will have to set up an account with a parking company but that doesn’t take long either…really a couple minutes to set up an account. You can do a Google search to find the companies. There are a ton of them out there. They are really competitive…which is a good thing for you because they are competing for your business.

Some of the sites are more user friendly than others…so look at them and see what looks good to you. Some will have higher or lower payouts. What I suggest is you start with one and get a baseline. Then you can always move your site to another parking company.

So it is really that quick. Once you have set up your account with the parking company you can have everything done in a matter of minutes. You register your domain for around $ 60-75. You redirect the name to the parking company. That’s how home based internet marketing businesses can easily and inexpensively profit from expired domain names.

The first step to setting up your home based internet marketing businesses is to get your domain name. A domain name is the name of your website. I’m going to give you some tips on how to selecting a domain name, finding out if it is available and buying your first domain name.

Tips on Selecting a Domain Name

You want to choose a name that makes it easy for a person to know what your website is all about. Don’t select a name that doesn’t mean anything to the average person who sees it. Instead, choose names that are either benefit oriented or descriptive of what you are offering.

Another naming tip: use common words that people know and are easy to spell! Choose words that sound good and since the words in your domain name will all run together if they look good together too that is great. Avoid names that may be confusing, like they have too many of the same letters all in a row is good…

“successsecrets” might not be a good choice. Make sense?

In general any single word or two word domain names will probably be taken already. Brainstorm about names and write a list of twenty or so ideas that you like. Focus on good descriptive names that are about three words.

For example if you are in the dog training niche your list might include

DogTrainingTips.com
DogTrainingSecrets.com
FreeDogTrainingSecrets.com
DogTrainingMadeEasy.com

If you are in the credit repair niche, you might select

CreditAfterBankruptcy.com
IncreaseYourCreditScores.com

Is it Available?

One of the easiest ways to find out if a domain name is available is by using GoDaddy.

Right on their homepage you can start searching for domain names by typing in the first name from your brainstorm list.

After you type in the name the screen will come back and tell you if that name is available or not. If it is, then you are ready to buy the name!

It is likely that your first choice, and maybe even your first several choices, will not be available. GoDaddy will give you some options on how to get that name but just click the back button and type in the next name on your list.

Buy the Name

Once you find the name you want to buy for your website you can buy the name. I do use GoDaddy to buy domains, but you can buy your domain elsewhere if you prefer. Companies that sell domain names are called domain name registrars.

When you buy your first domain name you will set up an account with the registrar. Make sure you write down any login information that either they provide or you make up. This is a great time to start a reference sheet with any login information you need for you home based internet marketing business.

Registration Length

People often want to know how long to buy the domain name. I suggest you start with just a single year. That will give you ample time to get your business going and see if the name is working for you. You can always renew the name later. There is just no need to pay for more than one year at this point.

You have now completed the first step that all home based internet marketing businesses have to go through, with these simple steps you have now bought your first domain name!

Understanding the domain name is important for the survival of your internet marketing business. After all, this is the name your business will be identified with. So what is a domain name exactly? How does it work and are there any technicalities to it that you should be aware of?

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the term that identifies a website or a computer online. The domain name is often one of the components of a URL. The most commonly used domain names are host names, used often to replace IP addresses, which are numeric. An alphabetical domain name is much easier to remember and find on the Internet or the intranet.

Domain names are designed to offer flexibility. A domain name, for example, can be associated with several IP addresses or several domain names may be used with just one IP address. This allows a single server to have several roles at the same time. You could, for example, host more than one website independently on a single server. Conversely, a single role may also be distributed among several servers or a single IP address assigned to multiple servers.

To illustrate, one server with an IP address of 123.0.45.167 may manage several sites at once, including:

domainname.com

www.domainname.com

domainname.org

www.domainname.org

domainname.net

www.domainname.net

Each time a visitor or Web surfer types or searches for that particular hostname, he is sent to the site itself.

Generally, a domain name would have its own IP address. A domain name is sometimes used interchangeably with a web address but they are not technically the same.

What is a domain name made of?

Domain names are made up of the letters of the alphabet (A to Z) and are case-insensitive. They may also be made up of numbers from 0 to 9 or a combination of numbers and letters. Sometimes, restrictions may be added, such as a hyphen.

Top level domain names

A top level or first level domain name, also called a TLD, is the ‘ending’ to a hostname. This is made up of at least three characters based on a generic code or it could be made up of two characters based on a territory code. Some top level domain name extensions may also be based on technical and linguistic subjects, as in the case of.mail,.web,.gal and.sco.

Some of the generic top level domain names or extensions are:

.com,.biz,.gov,.net,.org,.info,.edu,.biz,.name,.int,.info,.jobs,.tel,.aero,.coop,.root,.arpa,.museum,.pro

Top level domain names or extensions based on territory use letters that help define an area, such as.uk,.us,.jp,.nz,.eu,.va,.la, etc.

Second level and third level domain names

Second level domain names, also called SLDs. An SLD is the name found on the left side of the top level domain extension. For example, the domain name en.wikipedia.org. The second level domain here is ‘wikipedia’. The third level domain is the one found on the left side of the second level domain. In this case, it is the ‘en’.

It is also possible for domain names to have fourth and fifth levels, depending on the subdomains found therein.

The second level domain usually reflects the name of the company or brand, such as nike.com or oprah.com, for example. The third level is generally used to indicate a specific host server. So if you have a domain name mail.mydomainname.com, your host server in this case is your e-mail server. These days, however, this isn’t always accurate. Some subdomains may not have a purpose at all.

Uses of domain names

As a beginner in internet marketing, having a domain name is essential to your business. A domain name is part of a group, company or individual’s identity. It is used as an address on the World Wide Web, to help find a particular website of a specific company or person. Without a domain name, it is difficult for a beginner in internet marketing to be recognized or have an identity that will be associated with a particular product or service. Domain names are very important for search engine optimization, brand building, promotions and advertising.

Your domain name

For beginners in internet marketing, finding the right domain name can be easy or tough, depending on the brand or company and on what’s currently available. However, once you have established which domain name to use, have it registered immediately. This will help establish your right to use it and will ensure that it is reserved for you and will not be used by anyone else.

When trying to create your own web page it is important that it should look as professional as possible. If you have already made the effort to purchase a domain name in the first place – it is definitely worthwhile to have an email address linked to it.

Nothing looks as professional as having an email address that is linked to your domain name as it gives it a very polished and professional look.

In this article I will show you how easy it is to add an email address linked to your domain name.

Before I begin however – I want to quickly clarify one thing.

There are 2 kinds of emails. Internet and Domain based.

What’s the difference?

1. Web Based Email

This is usually a free service. The most popular ones are Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail.

To read your emails, you will first need to log into your internet account and then check your messages.

Although there is nothing wrong with using these emails, if you are trying to project a more professional image, it is best to create an email address linked to your domain. Additionally, you will find that domain based emails are generally much easier to remember!

2. Domain Based Email

Once you have bought a domain name, you can subsequently attach a relevant email address to it. For example Bob @vintagecars.com.

Setting up a domain based email is easily done via your hosting account. You will also be able to forward all your emails directly to your computer (Nescape, Outlook) and access them directly from there.

This is how to do it!

Understanding the process

You will need to create a new mail box at your hosting account. This new mail box will have exactly the same name as your new email address.

Let’s say the domain is vintagecars.com, the new email address could be Bob @vintagecars.com

Step by step guide

Although there is a multitude of hosting providers, the following steps will tend to be generally the same:

- Log into your hosting account (HostGator, Bluehost, Yahoo, etc.)(Nb: for those using HostGator, the easiest way to log in the control panel is by typing the following: www. nameofyourwebsite/cpanel)- Click email accounts- Add a new email account- Type in password

You can now access your emails via the web, your hosting account. In order to read your emails on your computer (Outlook, Nescape…) you will need to add the new email address to the relevant email program.

It is essential that we lay a good foundation. This applies to affiliate marketing too. It always helps to start out your affiliate marketing efforts on the right foot. You have probably spent some time studying exactly what you’re going to do whenever you start to work on the Internet. You browse through all of the marketing forums, look through the affiliate networks and then chose some decent programs. You probably even have an idea of what you’re going to do to promote it. All of this is good but what about choosing a domain name?

Many people don’t even consider this whenever they are thinking about affiliate marketing but it can help to get you off on the right track. There are quite a number of different things that you should be look out for whenever it comes to purchasing a domain name. For example, you should ensure that the name is directly identifiable with whatever niche you’re working in. Most importantly, it should be keyword rich and easy to remember.

Many people will tend to come back to your website if they see something that you offered but do not necessarily need to purchase at the time. For example, if you have a domain name that contains 20 words, people are not going to remember what it is as we people normally remember interesting names but not names which are dull and long. Make your domain short, catchy and easier to remember and you will get more repeat traffic.

You also need to ensure that you are not doing any bargain shopping when it comes to purchasing your domain name. Stay away from some of the larger networks. For example, GoDaddy is one of the most popular domain name registrars that are on the Internet. They even have Super Bowl commercials that are extremely popular and just as expensive. The problem with Go daddy is that if you get one spam complaint, whether it is warranted or not, your domain name will be taken away from you. All of your efforts will go down the drain at that point.

Even though you should stay away from these larger networks, make sure that you are not bargain shopping for your domain name. Domains will cost about $10 every year and running the risk of your registrar going out of business is not worth saving a dollar or two on a yearly basis. Go with a reliable and safe network and spend the extra dollar, you will be delighted with your decision.
